iW INSIDER | Eugene Hernandez: The Battle for Marriage Equality and the Intersection with Indie Film
by Eugene Hernandez (November 17, 2008)
For a full week now, many friends, colleagues and co-workers have asked me if and when I'd write more personally about the intensifying fight for marriage equality and its intersection with the indie film community. Last week brought calls for a
Sundance Film Festival boycott and then the focus shifted slightly to
Film Independent and its
Los Angeles Film Festival. Folks are clearly at odds over how to deal with the two festivals, arguing that each has some link to the Mormon church, which aggressively funneled some $20 million into the campaign to defeat Prop 8. But, the situation isn't black and white. Like most issues, it is complicated. There are no simple solutions and even at the
indieWIRE office we've had passionate debates on the matter. It goes without saying that I don't speak for any of my colleagues here.

Changeling," "
Noah's Arc: Jumping The Broom" and "
Rachel Getting Married." Since opening Wednesday, the

iW BOT | Sony Classics Trio Help Lead Out Fall Season
by Peter Knegt (November 3, 2008)
The unofficial transition from "Fall" to "Holiday" season happens in the film industry over the next few weeks and specialty distribs react by breaking out their big awards guns, from this month's "
Slumdog Millionaire" and "
Milk," to December's dozen or so options. But a lucky few will bleed business between seasons and it appears
Sony Pictures Classics' promising trio of "
Rachel Getting Married," "
Synecdoche, New York" and "
I've Loved You So Long" are good possibilities to be among them. None of them led the iW BOT this Halloween this weekend though, as that honor went to the debut weekend of
Bruce Campbell's
My Name is Bruce," which grossed $16,432 from its sole showing at New York's Sunshine Cinema.

Cash Crunch: Seeking Film Financing in Lean Times
by Anthony Kaufman (October 30, 2008)
"Call me when the economy is better." That's what one New York-based indie producer heard from a potential investor recently. With Wall Street crashing, hedge funds shaking out, and a possible global depression on the horizon, it's not exactly the best time to be looking for film financing these days. While some producers say it's too soon to see fallout from the economic turmoil, many are seeing immediate and substantial effects.

iW BOT | "Noah's Arc" Shocks Amid Batch of Strong Openers
by Peter Knegt (October 27, 2008)
In a weekend that saw the release of
Clint Eastwood's latest and the directorial debut of
Charlie Kaufman, not to mention "
High School Musical 3," an underdog emerged as arguably the frame's greatest success story.
Patrik-Ian Polk's "
Noah's Arc: Jumping the Broom," the first film released through
Logo's theatrical distribution arm, grossed an $151,681 on 5 screens for an astounding $30,336 average. Not that "Arc" was the
only success story. "
Changeling" marked one of Eastwood's highest per-theatre-averages, "
Synecdoche, New York" scored $172,194 from just 9 screens, and
Tomas Alfredson's "
Let The Right One In" looks to become a rare specialty horror hit.

iW BOT | Weekend Estimates: "Changeling," "Noah's Arc" Among Year's Best Per-Theater-Averages
by Peter Knegt (October 26, 2008)
Clint Eastwood's "
Changeling" found huge numbers amidst an impressive crowd of weekend openers, according to initial estimates from Rentrak early this afternoon. The
Universal release grossed $501,615 from just 15 screens, averaging $33,441. That's a little less than double what Eastwood's last film, 2006's "
Letters From Iwo Jima," averaged in its first weekend. Considerably more surprising, though, was the film that fell just behind "Changeling." "
Noah's Arc: Jumping the Broom" is the film adaptation of the
Logo series, and the first film release through Logo's film distribution unit.

Fanning the Fear of Zombies, Pursuing User-Generated Storylines via the Internet
by Eric Kohn (October 16, 2008)
Zombies have invaded the internet. Earlier this year, two separate attempts to create user-generated narratives about outbreaks of cannibalistic living dead launched into cyberspace, but each one approached the concept from a vastly different angle. "
Lost Zombies," which started in May, asks users to submit footage with "proof" of zombie outbreaks, which will be compiled into some semblance of a documentary feature. "
Nation Undead," a more streamlined project that gives people specific guidelines but more options for the material they can submit, went live earlier this year.

AWARDS WATCH '08 | Foreign Language Oscar Race May Offer Fewer Surprises and Acquisitions
by Anthony Kaufman (October 14, 2008)
From Bangladesh to Vietnam, nearly 100 countries were invited to submit films for this year's foreign-language Oscar race. (The official list of titles will come out this week.) Notoriously, the category is one of the most unpredictable - last year, leading contenders "
4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days" and "
Persepolis" were shafted, while entries from Poland, Israel and Russia surprisingly made the final cut. If this year's race may be one of the widest open in years, it may also turn out to be one of the most predictable due to a radical change in Academy regulations as a result of last year's "embarrassment," as one industry insider called it.
