BUZZiW NEWS | 16 Animated Titles Make Oscar Short List

Fourteen features have been submitted for consideration in the Animated Feature Film category for the 81st Academy Awards. The films include: "Bolt," "Delgo," "Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!," "Dragon Hunters," "Fly Me to the Moon," "Igor," "Kung Fu Panda," "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa," "$9.99," "The Sky Crawlers," "Sword of the Stranger," "The Tale of Despereaux," "WALL-E" and "Waltz with Bashir." Bolt," "Delgo," "Dragon Hunters," "$9.99," "The Sky Crawlers," "The Tale of Despereaux" and "Waltz with Bashir" have not yet had their required Los Angeles qualifying run. Under the rules for this category, a maximum of 3 films can be nominated in a year in which the field of eligible entries numbers at least 8 but fewer than 16. The 81st Academy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, January 22, 2009, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. [Brian Brooks]

BUZZiW NEWS | Mandvi To Host Gothams

"The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" correspondent and budding filmmaker Aasif Mandvi has been announced as the host of the 18th Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards on December 2nd in New York City. "We're thrilled to have Aasif hosting The 18th Annual Gotham Awards," said Michelle Byrd, executive director of IFP, in a statement. "He's wildly funny, and now with his upcoming debut as writer, star and producer of "7 To The Palace," he's an indie filmmaker. We couldn't think of a better person to host this year's show." IFP also announced an initial list presenters at this year's awards including Amy Adams, Marisa Tomei, Ethan Hawke, Patricia Clarkson, Mira Nair, Richard Jenkins, and Melissa Leo. BUZZiW NEWS | Bleiberg To Give "Adam" Qualifying Run

Bleiberg Entertainment will release Paul Schrader's "Adam Resurrected" in New York and Los Angeles for a qualifying run in December. Starring Jeff Goldblum and Willem Dafoe, the film is based on the novel by Israeli author Yoram Kaniuk. "'Adam Resurrected' has long been a passion project for Werner Wirsing and I, and it was incredibly important for us to release this film in theaters for awards consideration," said producer Ehud Bleiberg. "Paul Schrader and [screenwriter] Noah Stollman tackled a very complex story about survival and psychological healing, and Jeff Goldblum's raw performance will truly blow audiences away." "Adam" premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and will next be seen at the 2008 AFI Film Festival in Los Angeles, where it screens November 8 and 9. [Peter Knegt]

BUZZiW NEWS | "Hunger," "Bruges" Lead British Indie Noms

Steve McQueen's "Hunger" and Martin McDonagh's "In Bruges" led the 11th British Independent Film Award nominations with seven nods apiece. Both were nominated for Best British Independent Film, alongside "Man on Wire," "Slumdog Millionaire" and "Somers Town." McQueen and McDonagh both received nods for Best Debut Director, while McQueen also got a best director nod, competing against "Slumdog"'s Danny Boyle, "Somers"' Shane Meadows, "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas"' Mark Herman and "Son of Rambow"'s Garth Jennings. Among the acting nominees were "Hunger"'s Michael Fassbender and Liam Cunningham, "Bruges"' Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Ralph Fiennes, and "Happy-Go-Lucky's Sally Hawkins, Alexis Zegerman and Eddie Marsan. BUZZiW NEWS | "Dark Knight" Leads Hollywood Awards

The 12th Annual Hollywood Film Festival's Hollywood Awardsceremony was held Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" was chosen as "Hollywood Movie of the Year" by public voting, while previously determined honorees included Josh Brolin, Kirstin Scott Thomas, Marisa Tomei, James Franco, Sally Hawkins and Robert Pattinson for acting, Clint Eastwood and John Patrick Shanley for directing, and Shanley and Dustin Lance Black for screenwriting. The ceremony also saw the announcement of winners from the film festival's Discovery Awards competition. The winners included David Pomes' "Cook County" for best feature film and Dilip Mehta's "The Forgotten Woman" for best documentary. [Peter Knegt]

BUZZiW NEWS | Santa Barbara To Fete Scott Thomas

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival will honor Kristin Scott Thomas with the Cinema Vanguard Award at the 24th edition of the Fest, which runs January 22-February 1, 2009. "A masterful performance by a British actress in a French film and a triumphant Broadway debut in Chekhov in the same year - Kristin Scott Thomas is in a league by herself and an artistic force to be reckoned with," said SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling in a statement. The award was created "in recognition of an actor who has forged his/her own path - taking artistic risks and making a significant and unique contribution to film." BUZZiW NEWS | "Rene" Doc Winner For European Film Awards

Helena Trestikoba's "Rene" has been announced as the winner of the European Film Academy's documentary award. The recipient of the award is chosen by an independent jury and this year's jury was made up of Danish producer Karoline Leth, Finnish programme director of the Moscow Film Festival, Kirsi Tykkylaeinen, and British producer Alan Hayling. "This is a film which tells a powerful story," said the jury in a statement. "Filmed over 20 years, about an extraordinary character on the edge of society. It is a longitual documentary of outstanding quality. The jury found its examination of the relationship between subject and filmmaker fascinating and thought-provoking." BUZZiW NEWS | European Film Awards Announce Doc Nods

The European Film Academy have announced the nominations for European Film Academy Documentary 2008 - Prix Arte. The ten nominees are Nino Kirtadze's "Durakovo - Le Village Des Fous," Carlos Saura's "Fados," Thomas Heise's "Kinder. Wie Die Zeit Vergeht," Antoine Cattin and Pavel Kostomarov's "Le Mere," Gonzalo Arijon's "Stranded: I've Come From a Plane That Crashed on the Mountains," Pavel Koteck and Miroslav Janek's "Citizen Havel," Arto Halonen's "Shadow of the Holy Book," Helena Trestikova's "Rene" and Klaartje Quirijns' "The Dictator Hunter." This year's documentary jury will now convene in Berlin to screen the nominated films and decide on the winner. Robert F. "Bobby" Liu, ASC and Isidore Mankofsky, ASC will be honored at the 23rd Annual American Society of Cinematographers Outstanding Achievement Awardson February 15, 2009, at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles. Liu will receive the ASC Career Achievement in Television Award and Mankofsky will receive the ASC Presidents Award. The Santa Barbara International Film Festival has announced that it will honor Penelope Cruz with the Outstanding Performer of the Year Award at the 24th edition of the Fest, which runs January 22-February 1, 2009. "There are few actresses who can today be described as international movie goddesses, and this year, with her exceptional work in 'Elegy' and 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona,' Penelope Cruz has earned that description," said SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling in a statement. Cruz will receive the award on Saturday, January 31, at the Arlington Theatre in Santa Barbara. Previous recipients include Angelina Jolie (2008), Helen Mirren (2007), and Heath Ledger (2006). The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that the field of Documentary Short Subject entries for the 81st Academy Awards has been narrowed to eight films, of which three to five will earn Oscar nominations. The eight films are: "The Conscience of Nhem En," "David McCullough: Painting with Words," "Downstream," "The Final Inch," "Smile Pinki," "Tongzhi in Love," "Viva La Causa," and "The Witness from the Balcony of Room 306." When the guests at the European Film Awards ceremony take their seats at Copenhagen's Forum on December 6, 2008, the host of the evening will be popular Danish journalist, anchorman and TV-host Mikael Bertelsen. On stage with him will be the Danish Radio Big Band, Denmark's most popular jazz orchestra. Among the evening's announced guests are Dame Judi Dench, this year's recipient of the European Film Academy Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Danish Dogma brothers Soren Kragh-Jacobsen, Kristian Levring, Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg who will receive the award European Achievement in World Cinema 2008. Producer Laurence Mark has been announced as the producer of the 81st Annual Academy Awards telecast, while writer/director Bill Condon has been tapped to executive produce. It will be their first involvement in the production of an Oscar show.
