BUZZiW NEWS | "Drummer" Wins Reel Asian Audience Award

The 12th annual Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival came to a close on Sunday, November 16, seeing the argest attendance in its history as well as many sold out shows. The fest announced awards in a number of categories, including the NOW Audience Award, which was given to Kenneth Bi's "The Drummer," which was the festival's opening night gala. Other awards included the NFB Best Documentary Award, which was given to Paul Wong's "Perfect Day," the Kim Orr Barristers Best Narrative Feature or Video Award, which was given to Liew Seng Tat's "Flower in the Pocket," and the Centennial College @ Wallace Studios Most Innovative Film Award, which went to Randall Lloyd Okita's "Machine With a Wishbone." BUZZiW NEWS | Balkan Funds Announces Awards

For the sixth consecutive year, the Balkan Fund of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival concluded its three-day Workshop with the participation of 11 pre-selected projects submitted by writers, directors and producers from the Balkan countries. An international jury consisting of Christina Kallas, Richard Kwietniowski, Milcho Manchevski, Simon Perry and Razvan Radulescu granted Balkan Fund Awards to four projects. They included Javor Gardev's "Zincograph," Sirri Sureyya Onder's "Number Zero," Natassa Segou's "White Thread, Black Thread," and Emre Yalgin's "Submission." This year's 49th Thessaloniki International Film Festival is screening four previous Balkan Fund awarded films: "Small Crime" by Christos Georgiou (awarded in 2003), "Snow" by Aida Begic (awarded in 2004), "A Farewell to Hemingway" by Svetloslav Ovcharov (also awarded in 2004 and an International Premiere in Thessaloniki) and "The Tour" by Goran Markovic (participated in 2007). BUZZiW NEWS | Palm Strings To Honor Howard

The 20th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) will present filmmakerRon Howard with its Director's Lifetime Achievement Award, Festival organizers announced today. The award will be given with special focus on Howard's latest film, "Frost /Nixon," and as acknowledgement of his 50th anniversary in entertainment. "'Frost /Nixon' is yet another powerful film from one of the industry's true icons and can be included amongst the classics of Ron Howard's total body of work," said Festival chairman Harold Matzner in a statement. "We are honored to present Howard with this honor at this year's Festival." The Awards Gala will be held on Tuesday, January 6, 2009, at the Palm Springs Convention Center, and will be hosted by Mary Hart. The Festival will be held January 6-19, 2009. [Peter Knegt]

BUZZiW NEWS | "Amal" Big Winner At MIAAC Film Festival

The 8th Annual Mahindra Indo-American Arts Council Film FestivalSooni Taraporevala's "Little Zizou." The night concluded with an awards ceremony, with winners including Richie Mehta's "Amal," which won the Indira Mahindra Award for Best Film, an award that carries a $5,000 prize. Other winners included Sooni Taraporevala ("Little Zizou") and Ashish Avikunthak ("Shadows Formless"), who shared the best director award, Taraporevala also won for best screenplay while "Formless" actress Mandira Banerjee won the best actress award. Sachin Khedekar won the best actor award for "The Forgotten Hero," Nishtha Jain's "Lakshmi" won the Analog Digital Award for best documentary, and Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK's "Noise" won for best short film. BUZZiW NEWS | "27 Club," "Americana" Lead Ojai Winners

The 2008 Ojai FIlm Festival announced the winners of its competition, with Nicholas Bruckman's "La Americana" winning for best documentary feature and Erica Dunton's "The 27 Club" taking best narrative feature. Other winners included Christina Voros' "The Ladies" for best documentary short, Jelmar Hufen's "Voor een paar knikkers meer" ("For a few marbles or more") for best narrative short, Nina Chernik's "Maine Story" for best student film, Bill Plympton's "Idiots and Angels" for best animated film, and Ava Karvonen's "Seeds of Change: The ECO Story" for the festival theme award. BUZZiW NEWS | United States Artists Announces Fellows

United States Artists (USA), the national artists' advocacy organization, announced the recipients of fifty USA Fellowships for 2008 totaling $2.5 million. This marks the third consecutive year of the USA Fellows program, which provides direct support for artists by annually awarding fifty unrestricted grants of $50,000 to artists of all disciplines from across the country. The USA Fellows for 2008 hail from 21 states and range in age from 31 to 82; they were chosen by panels of experts in each field in recognition of the caliber and impact of their work. They include five in Architecture and Design; four in Crafts and Traditional Arts; five in Dance; nine in Literature (fiction, nonfiction, and poetry); six in Media (film and video); six in Music; five in Theater Arts; and 10 in Visual Arts. Fourteen features have been submitted for consideration in the Animated Feature Film category for the 81st Academy Awards. The films include: "Bolt," "Delgo," "Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!," "Dragon Hunters," "Fly Me to the Moon," "Igor," "Kung Fu Panda," "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa," "$9.99," "The Sky Crawlers," "Sword of the Stranger," "The Tale of Despereaux," "WALL-E" and "Waltz with Bashir." Bolt," "Delgo," "Dragon Hunters," "$9.99," "The Sky Crawlers," "The Tale of Despereaux" and "Waltz with Bashir" have not yet had their required Los Angeles qualifying run. Under the rules for this category, a maximum of 3 films can be nominated in a year in which the field of eligible entries numbers at least 8 but fewer than 16. The 81st Academy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, January 22, 2009, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. [Brian Brooks]

BUZZiW NEWS | Bahamas To Fete Faris

The Bahamas International Film Festival (BIFF) announced today that Anna Faris will be honored with BIFF's special Rising Star Tribute. The announcement was made by BIFF Founder & Executive Director Leslie Vanderpool. "Anna Faris represents everything that is good about Hollywood's present and future," said Vanderpool in a statement. :Through the diverse roles she has taken on early in her career, she has displayed tremendous creativity and a marvelous gift for acting." BUZZiW NEWS | Academy Announces Fellowship Winners

Six new screenwriters have been selected as winners in the 23rd Don and Gee Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Each writer or writing team will receive a prestigious $30,000 prize, the first installment of which will be distributed at a gala dinner in Beverly Hills on November 13, featuring a keynote address by screenwriter Scott Frank. This year's winner's are Jeremy Bandow for "Hive," Ken Kristensen and Colin Marshall for "Out of Breath," Jason Micallef for "Butter," Eric Nazarian for "Giants," and Lee Patterson for "Snatched." The winners were selected from 5,224 scripts submitted for this year's competition. The competition is open to any individual who has not sold or optioned a screenplay or teleplay for more than $5,000, or received a fellowship or prize that includes a "first look" clause, an option, or any other quid pro quo involving the writer's work. BUZZiW NEWS | 2nd Adrienne Shelly Gala To Honor Grant Recipients

On November 17th at the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts at New York University, the 2nd Annual Adrienne Shelly Fundraising Gala will take place to celebrate both the life and work of Adrienne Shelly, and the 2007-2008 Adrienne Shelly Foundation grant recipients. The recipients were Pamela Johnson's "Stitches," Cynthia Wade's "Freeheld," Annie Sundberg and Ricki Stern's "The Devil Came on Horseback," Maryam Keshevarz's "Circumstance," Enrica Perez's "Taxista," Marissa O'Guinn's "Foiled" and Eunhee Cho's "Inner Circle Line." The Adrienne Shelly Foundation was created in 2007 to support "the artistic achievements of female actors, writers and directors through a series of scholarships and grants, providing recipients with financial support and consultative access to the Foundation's advisory board." BUZZiW NEWS | "Pool," "Doormat" Lead South Asian Fest Winners

The 5th Annual South Asian Film Festival wrapped up this weekend in New York City, with the Grand Jury awarding director Chris Smith's "The Pool" the Best Narrative Feature and Christy Garland and Susan Armstrong's "Doormat" the Best Documentary Feature. "The Pool" is the story of a "room boy" working at hotel in Panjim, Goa, while "Doormat" spotlights a small corner of India where a community holds onto a vanishing way of life. Additionally, the winner of the short film competition was Dipti Gogna's "Narmeen," and Audience Choice Awards were handed out to Jaffar Mahmood's "Shades of Ray" for narrative feature and Joshua Weinstein's "Flying on One Engine" for documentary feature. BUZZiW NEWS | "Hunger," "Bruges" Lead British Indie Noms

Steve McQueen's "Hunger" and Martin McDonagh's "In Bruges" led the 11th British Independent Film Award nominations with seven nods apiece. Both were nominated for Best British Independent Film, alongside "Man on Wire," "Slumdog Millionaire" and "Somers Town." McQueen and McDonagh both received nods for Best Debut Director, while McQueen also got a best director nod, competing against "Slumdog"'s Danny Boyle, "Somers"' Shane Meadows, "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas"' Mark Herman and "Son of Rambow"'s Garth Jennings. Among the acting nominees were "Hunger"'s Michael Fassbender and Liam Cunningham, "Bruges"' Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Ralph Fiennes, and "Happy-Go-Lucky's Sally Hawkins, Alexis Zegerman and Eddie Marsan. BUZZiW NEWS | "Dark Knight" Leads Hollywood Awards

The 12th Annual Hollywood Film Festival's Hollywood Awardsceremony was held Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" was chosen as "Hollywood Movie of the Year" by public voting, while previously determined honorees included Josh Brolin, Kirstin Scott Thomas, Marisa Tomei, James Franco, Sally Hawkins and Robert Pattinson for acting, Clint Eastwood and John Patrick Shanley for directing, and Shanley and Dustin Lance Black for screenwriting. The ceremony also saw the announcement of winners from the film festival's Discovery Awards competition. BUZZiW NEWS | TFI Announces Sloan Fund Recipients

The Tribeca Film Institute (TFI) has announced the selection of five film projects to receive financial and creative support from its inaugural TFI Sloan Filmmaker Fund, supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Out of 130 applications submitted, the five projects chosen will receive a total of $110,000. The TFI Sloan Filmmaker Fund supports narrative projects that "tell compelling stories about science and technology or portray scientists, engineers and mathematicians as major characters." The selected projects are "Face Value," "The Radioactive Boy Scout," "Alva," "A Noble Affair" and "Kitty Hawk." "The TFI Sloan Filmmaker Fund affords us an opportunity to provide funding at a crucial time in the industry," said Jane Rosenthal, Co-Chairman of the Board, TFI, in a statement. "These are projects we would like to see brought to fruition and we are happy to be able to support them with funding and our vote of confidence." BUZZiW NEWS | Santa Barbara To Fete Scott Thomas

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival will honor Kristin Scott Thomas with the Cinema Vanguard Award at the 24th edition of the Fest, which runs January 22-February 1, 2009. "A masterful performance by a British actress in a French film and a triumphant Broadway debut in Chekhov in the same year - Kristin Scott Thomas is in a league by herself and an artistic force to be reckoned with," said SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling in a statement. The award was created "in recognition of an actor who has forged his/her own path - taking artistic risks and making a significant and unique contribution to film." The Motion Picture Club have announced their 2008 honorees. Amy Adams and Richard Jenkins will be awarded the Star of the Year honors, Rosemarie DeWitt and Luke Goss will be awarded the Stars of Tomorrow honors, and Ed Harris will be feted with the Director of the Year award. The 15th Annual Austin Film Festival has announced its 2008 competition film winners. For narrative feature, Nobuyuki Miyake's "Lost & Found" took the award, Giommi Giovanni's "Les Ninjas du Japon" won for documentary feature, Andrew Okpeaha MacLean's "Sikumi" won for narrative short, Gabriella Yepes' "Danzak" won for narrative student short, Bartosz Blaschke's "Zietek" won documentary short, and Dennis Tupicoff's "Chainsaw" won for animated short. BUZZiW NEWS | Slamdance Announces Screenplay Competition Winners

The Top 10 winners of the 13th Annual Slamdance Screenplay Competition have been announced, with Neil McGowan's script "Numbers" taking top honors. McGowan, who works as an administrative assistant for a non-profit research and analysis company and is a first time screenwriter, was given a $7,000 cash prize for best feature-length screenplay during an awards presentation hosted by the Writers Guild of America, West. Other winners (ordered 2nd through 10th place) include: "Goodman's Garden" by Douglas Miller; "Want and Curiosity" by Eric Weller; "Human Resources" by Marissa Jo Cerar; "Lucas Donovan" by Keisha Poiro; "Moonbeam Fisherman" by John Dummer;" "Mendelssohn" by Joseph Yuan and Jeanette Manning; "Hair Today" by Dennis Douda; "Czechoslovakia" by Alvin Easter; and "Truckers VS. Cinereach has announced the four filmmakers selected to participate in its 2009 Reach Film Fellowship Program. The 2009 Reach Film Fellows are Brendan McQueen, Jules Monteyne, Dena Greenbaum and Danielle Russell. "As young filmmakers, we understand how difficult the transition can be from student to professional in the film industry," said Phillip Engelhorn, Cinereach founder in a statement. "Our mission is to connect talented young people with resources and access to industry leaders to create films addressing tough issues. We are excited to see the four films develop over the next six months." The Bahamas International Film Festival have announced that actor Laurence Fishburne will be honored with their Career Achievement Award at this year's Festival, taking place December 4-11 in Nassau. Fishburne will be on hand for the special tribute and presentation on Sunday, December 7th. Sir Sean Connery will present him with the award. "We are excited and honored to welcome Laurence Fishburne to the Bahamas and pay tribute to his remarkable career with our special Career Achievement Award," said BIFF Founder and Executive Director Leslie Vanderpool in a statement.
